Staying Connected

WiFi Hotspot in Key West. MORE: AboutFantasyFest.com

It’s hard to imagine that anyone visiting Key West could possibly have work on their mind – especially during Fantasy Fest.Ok, you’re really not going to get much ‘work’ done, but you may feel the need to stay connected, keeping in touch or just pretend to be in the office…

Whatever the reason, even when vacationing in the Keys sometimes a Wi-Fi connection to the rest of the world is required.

So, what is the best way to stay connected?
Should you pre-purchase an air card thereby reducing the internet dependency on your hotel or other area “hot spots” ? It really depends on your needs and the importance of an immediate, reliable and secure connection. Most hotels and B&B’s will offer WI-FI, but with the large number of visitors during Fantasy Fest, signals may be sluggish at times.
If time is money for you, then a good way to justify this time away from the office might be with a portable “hot spot” of your own. Heck, just working during the four hour drive from Miami then back can save you one vacation day – just make sure that you are not the one driving. That’s what we like to call a working vacation!
Smart phones are also a good option. With the ability to read and quickly reply to office emails, it’s the next best thing to being there – right. Keep in mind as you are sitting at an outdoor bar watching the shenanigans in the street, no matter how large the boobies are, resist all temptation to send a photo to a co-worker – it will go viral in a matter of minutes. It’s a guy thing, I know you can’t help yourself.
Whichever option you choose, keep in mind that Key’s time doesn’t always correlate with regular office hours. With parties and events 24/7 there is no telling what sleep/wake schedule you might find yourself on. You could use this to your advantage; emails sent in the wee hours of the morning might suggest to co-workers that you are a dedicated workaholic. Or it could backfire; an incoherent email is pretty much the same as slurring your words in person.
You really do not get smarter, wittier or sexier with more alcohol. Write the emails during moments of sobriety then send at opportune times. Remember this and you will thank me in the morning.
Oh, and on the same subject. Facetime – during Fantasy Fest, avoid it for family and business.
